06/29/2003: "Monday Monday, Can't Trust That Day"

Our broadband Internet service provider, loosely connected with AT&T, I think, will be going through its third "transition" in three years tomorrow morning. Monday. They flatly refuse to provide configuration information and claim that it will be posted on their website Monday, June 30th, after the "transition" has taken place. If anything goes wrong, of course, no one will be able to access their website for configuration information without a dial-up. Sigh. We have a few things up in the air right now that can't really afford down time. How will it go?

When irritating but unavoidable circumstances are approaching, sometimes you can get a feel for how things will turn out by watching for signs. I'm not talking about goat innards here, or casting old bits of bones, I'm talking about how other things generally seem to be going. Does a tight rope walker walk the rope on the afternoon of a day that started by having to change a tire to look for a missing dog by car, and then getting stopped for a traffic violation only to discover that he has no driver's license in the pocket of his bathrobe. I wouldn't, would you?

The only real sign, so far, has been an only slightly ominous notice from the city public works department informing us that Monday, June 30, due to a valve replacement, it will be necessary to shut off the water supply at approximately 9 AM and keep it off until the repairs are completed. No coffee or toilet flushing it seems.

Bad, but not too bad. Maybe if I have to worry, I should worry about Murphy's law. Murphy's law, goes in part, something like. "if it can go wrong it will" and we have to roll over five domain names and move the sites, reconfiguring the FTP and CGI, to a new hosting ISP before July 6, next Sunday. And, Friday is the Fourth of July holiday. If AT&T got it's shit together, what would we have to whine about?
