07/31/2003: "Thor's Bummer"
I stopped by Heyerdahl's Cafe again last week, this time with my beloved, (see entry: Konk Tiki) and got the skinny. It was 6 PM local time, in Bridgeman, Michigan, so we passed on the Swedish pancakes and ordered from the dinner menu. Service was slow though the place was not crowded and I stood outside with my iced tea and smoked. Click more..below.
Our food finally arrived. Ginny had an open faced beef sandwich with mashed potatoes and gravy. I had calves liver and onions, something I order when I'm out, from time to time, because I can't get it at home. You see, Ginny won't touch raw liver.
The results were not up to the old Heyerdahl's standard. The beef sandwich carried far less beef and the gravy was nothing to write home about. My calves liver was ok, but I ordered it with french fries imagining them soaking up the juice from the liver and onions, but my plate was absolutely dry, as if someone I had padded everything down with paper towels to keep my fries nice and neat. They made it look kind of like the diet special. Likewise, the slice of pie that followed looked good, but tasted more like something you get out of a vending machine.
Upon investigation, we discovered that the Heyerdahls have sold out and new management has taken over as of January of this year. We will probably try it again later in the summer just to be sure, but, at least for now, my recommendation is withdrawn.
