10/04/2003: "Blogarama"

Blogarama has a new look and a new review: All New Blogarama? Link opens in a new window.
Blogarama is a blog directory. There are lots of blog directories, but Blogarama is the best. Who cares? Well, you do if you like to read blogs. Also, if you have a blog or are thinking about becoming a blogger, then you need to know where to list that blog, or you might just as well do your writing in a diary and keep it in your sock drawer because no one will know you're there. OK, what's so hot about Blogarama? Click more.. below.

I'll tell you what so hot about Blogarama. They have thought about what you need to know when you're looking for a blog to read, and they have given it to you. It's not perfect, but I think it's as close as you can get. Blogs are listed in categories, not unusual, but within those categories they are ranked by the date they are registered with Blogarama, within a count of the number of links back to Blogarama from each blog. Let me chew that down a little finer for you. If you just broke up with your beloved and you feel like reading blogs about "relationships," one of Blogarama's categories, you're not just faced with a list of blogs in alphabetical order, or worse, the order in which they were registered, but a list of blogs about relationships with the ones that that are getting the most traffic at the top of the list. Sure, you can still look for interesting titles and captivating descriptions, but you have something more to go on. Namely, unless the blog is very new, good ones get more traffic than bad ones.

If you don't have a particular category in mind when you get to Blogarama, or if what you have in mind doesn't fit in a particular category, they have a search function. They don't index blog content, you have to go Google for that, but they do index blog titles and all the words in the blog author's description. For example, the title of this blog is Cliff's Notes and the description is "Life is brutal, so don't bust your hump; just read the Cliff's Notes. It worked in school, and it'll work now. Life, Love, Truth, Beauty, Sex, and much more, all covered for your convenience. Just a mouse click away. Visit now, it's free!", so you could find it with: Cliff, "life love truth beauty," hump, or whatever. The search also supports limited Boolean expressions.

If you just want to browse and don't have any subject matter in mind, Blogarama helps you by lumping all the categories together in two sequences, "What's Cool," ranked by clicks into Blogarama (high traffic sites), "What's Popular," ranked by clicks out of Blogarama to the site in question. These "link count rankings" are what set Blogarama apart, and I can't think of any better way for them to help separate the wheat from the chaff. Just as icing on the cake, they also have a blog review function, and someone takes the time to audit them before for publishing, thereby avoiding obscene or otherwise nonsensical reviews.

All in all, they've done a helluva job. See for yourself, the link will open in another window, CLICK HERE!

Yes, I did rotate "This Week's Skin."
