10/26/2003: "Alien Returns"
Alien, as you probably know by now, is scheduled for rerelease as a director's cut (Ridley Scot) this coming Halloween. The Alien series has been major bread and butter for Sigourney Weaver, who has starred in all four of the films. Alien, the first of the series, also stars Tom Skerritt, John Hurt, Veronica Cartwright, Harry Dean Stanton, and Yaphet Kotto (TV's Homicide) with Bilbo Baggins (Ian Holm) as Ash, the backstabbing, "synthetic" science officer. The movie doesn't beat out Aliens, where Sigourney Weaver does her memorable Rambo shtick, but the effects have aged well, and the suspense is still gripping even on a TV screen; most importantly, it is still gripping even now that you have seen the alien, probably many times. If you haven't seen Alien, it was released in 1979; I think it will knock your socks off on the big screen, so don't wait for the DVD. And, if you have seen it, revisit the stark terror of realizing, with Ripley, that the alien has escaped with her on the pod. I was so out of my mind during that scene that I almost didn't notice that Sigourney Weaver was displaying what was probably the finest ass on the planet as she climbed into her spacesuit.
I don't know what "director's cut" will mean to Alien in terms of additional footage or alterations, but if the web site is any indication, they're definitely doing their best to make it a good time. The web site is Flash MX and looks like the interface on a high-end sci-fi DVD, but better. Check it out, and see if you don't find yourself looking forward to Halloween for more than just the usual reasons. Click here for Alien site.
