11/18/2003: "Privilege?"
Gay couples continue to pursue matrimony. Why? The Associated Press reports, "Massachusetts' highest court ruled 4-3 Tuesday that the state's ban on same-sex marriage is unconstitutional and gave lawmakers 180 days to come up with a solution that would allow gay couples to wed." Look, isn't there enough pain in the world without inviting the "State," which does nothing right, into your relationship as a third partner? If you don't know what that means, just ask some straight friend who's been divorced. Hey gay people, you don't have to get married; you can't -oops - get pregnant! Right? Such a deal. Remember, gay people, that you are called "gay" because you get to go out with the girls/guys and still get laid. Whose grass is greener than that? Wake up and smell the coffee. Click more.. below.
I guess you just don't know what you've got until it's gone. Someday you too will have to ratify your affection for one another in a civil union - a "privilege" currently reserved for heterosexual couples - or put up with endless bullshit from society that will make you look back fondly on the days when all you had to fear was the occasional rude homophobe. And it's a hugely uphill battle; the Associated Press report continues, "Legal observers said the case took a significant step beyond the 1999 Vermont Supreme Court decision that led to civil unions in that state.
"In addition to Vermont, courts in Hawaii and Alaska have previously ruled that the states did not have a right to deny marriage to gay couples. In those two states, the decisions were followed by the adoption of constitutional amendments limiting marriage to heterosexual couples. No American court has ordered the issuance of a marriage license -- a privilege reserved for heterosexual couples.
"The U.S. House is currently considering a constitutional ban on gay marriage. President Bush, although he believes marriage should be defined as a union between one man and one woman, recently said that a constitutional amendment is not yet necessary."
Jesus, after all that I'm forced to wonder what Arnold would do?
