05/10/2004: "The Cost"

As of Monday, May 10, 769 U.S. service members have died since the beginning of military operations in Iraq last year, and a couple of hundred of these were killed in traffic accidents. Not too bad considering this is, after all, a real live shooting war. We even know why we're fighting, and the people who have been killed, so far, all chose to join the military of their own free will. This war in Iraq is the cleanest war in history, as war goes. But, will it turn into Vietnam? Click more.. below.

Comparing Iraq to the toilet that was Vietnam, a favorite pastime of political rabble browsers, is a joke. We were in Vietnam from 1961 to 1975 losing 58,177 troops killed in action, mostly draftees, and leaving 2211 behind as missing in action. And, as most of you probably know, we lost. Why were we there in the first place? Well, I don't know, but I do know that the military has not forgotten how not to fight a war. If you have to fight, and you do when people are blowing up your shit, then you are far better off with a military leadership that remembers Vietnam first hand. And, it's pretty clear to me that they do remember. Thank our lucky stars.
